The historical art of heraldry plays many roles in the Society. Heralds help participants research and construct medieval names from historical sources and design and display heraldic imagery known as devices (commonly called “coats of arms”) and badges.
At SCA events, a herald often serves as a “master of ceremonies” and can be found delivering announcements, introducing tournament combatants, reading proclamations and scrolls, and more.
Like the nobles and countries in medieval Europe, SCA members, kingdoms, and some officers can have their own heraldic device. Each device is registered with the College of Heralds and uniquely identifies its owner.
